Kenya Railways has announced the resumption of the Madaraka Express stop at Voi station, giving passengers who want to connect their rail journeys with Mombasa or Nairobi a reason to smile.
What? Where will the Madaraka Express stop and where?
In a statement on Friday, December 13, the agency said the train from Nairobi would stop between 2:05 am and 2:08 am, and the one from Mombasa to Nairobi would stop between 11:45 and 11:48 pm.
Kenya Railways noted that the stoppages will be effective on Sunday, December 15.
“Kenya Railways is pleased to announce that on December 15, the 10pm Madaraka Express passenger service train from Nairobi Terminus will now stop three minutes at VOI station,” Kenya Railways posted on its X.
What is SGR?
The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is a Kenyan government project under the Vision 2030 development agenda.
It is the largest infrastructure project since the country gained independence in 1963. The project aims to facilitate transportation activities between Nairobi and Mombasa. Nine stations are on the way.
Plans are underway to expand the project to other cities in East Africa.
What? SGR will be extended to Uganda?
On Sunday, December 8, President William Ruto announced plans to extend the SGR from Naivasha to Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The expansion of the SGR aims to increase regional trade, improve cross-border transport, and promote economic integration within East Africa.
Speaking at the East African Community (EAC) games in Mombasa, Ruto emphasized the importance of infrastructure for regional integration and integration.
Extension of Sgr to Kisumu
In January 2024, Governor Anyang 'Nyongo'o welcomed the announcement of the expansion of the SGR to Poisonous.
Governor Nyong'o sees the expansion of the SGR as a catalyst for economic growth in the region and expects an increase in lake transport.
