Kizza Besigye is suing Kenya and Uganda for allegedly kidnapping him, he wants compensation of KSh 12m

Kampala, Uganda The leader of the opposition in Uganda, Kizza Besigye, has opened a case against the Kenyan and Ugandan governments in the East African Court, in the Kampala registry, alleging kidnapping.

With Besigye's wife, he was allegedly abducted in Nairobi on November 16 after attending a conference with a Narc-Kenya leader. Martha Karua.

He, along with his colleague Hajj Obeid Lutale, were reportedly transferred to a military court in Kampala, where he was charged with illegal possession of weapons.

In his petition, according to a Daily Monitor report, Besigye claims that Kenyan authorities enabled Ugandan security forces to carry out what he claims are “external kidnappings,” a move he claims violates Kenya's 2010 Constitution and the East African Charter.

“The security apparatus of the second respondent (Kenya) aided and abetted the abduction of the two citizens from Kenya to Uganda without repatriation or legal action,” the petition was read in court.

Through their lawyers, Kiiza and Mugisha Advocates, Besigye and Lutale are seeking compensation of KSh 12,945,000 each.

They are also calling for a permanent ban on the Kenyan government participating in or supporting the forced removal or abduction of foreigners from its territory without following legal procedures.

Meanwhile, Besigye has contested his trial in a military court, saying that trying civilians in a military court is unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, popular preacher Elvis Mbonye claimed that in October 2023, he predicted the kidnapping of a famous politician.

With his prediction, Mbonye explained that the disappearance of the politician will attract talks from international leaders.

Mbonye reminded East African leaders of the intersection between divine understanding and governance, and asked leaders to play the role of spiritual guidance to solve political challenges.
