Newspapers: Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Claim There Is A Conspiracy To Disrupt The 2027 Election

On Monday, December 9, national newspapers reported extensively on the ongoing debate on the re-formation of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The newspapers also reported on the information about the performance of the Members of Parliament.

1. Daily Nation

A public report on the call of the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua to urgently reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking while Kasarani On Sunday, December 8, Gachagua said the lack of commissioners tarnishes the credibility of the 2027 General Election.

Citing the report of the Kriegler Commission, he said that an electoral body should exist three years before the General Election, but the country does not have one.

The Krigler report recommended that the election commission be in place three years before the election. We are now about 2 and a half years without IEBC and people can read corruption,” Gachagua said.

On his part, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused the Kenya Kwanza government of obstructing the IEBC restructuring process.

Speaking at the PCEA Nguthuru Parish-ELIM Church in Kenol, Murang'a County, he said that Azimio's coalition complied with the deadline set by the court and submitted Koki Muli's name to the IEBC Electoral Panel.

“The government has filed an appeal in the Kiambu High Court against our decision. They want candidates who are easy to manipulate. It is a strategy of Ruto to make sure there is no IEBC,” said Musyoka.

The former vice president added that Speaker Moses Wetang'ula is also part of the conspiracy against Kenyans.

2. The Star

This newspaper reported on the latest result card of the Parliament which showed that nineteen (19) MPs have remained largely silent in debates and discussions on national and local issues.

Mzalendo's report, witnessed by TUKO.co.ke, covering the period August 1, 2023, to November 7, 2024, mentions MPs who have not been seen in the National Assembly for more than a year.

Among the less vocal are 10 United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MPs, including Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Joseph Tonui Kipkosgei (Kuresoi South), Mathias Robi Nyamabe (Kuria West), and Samuel Kinuthia (Subukia).

Others of UDA those named are Paul Chebor Chebet (Rongai), Stephen Karani Wachira (Laikipia West), Clement Sloya (Sabatia), Alfred Mutai (Kuresoi North), Barre Hussein Abdi (Tarbaj), and elected MP Joseph Wainaina Iraya.

3. Nation Today

The Kiswahili newspaper reported Deputy President Kithure Kindiki's statement regarding the delay in the process of restructuring the IEBC.

Speaking in Kakamega, Kindiki defended President William Ruto regarding the ongoing impasse.

Kindiki explained that the lack of a functioning IEBC is due to a court order preventing the formation of a selection committee that should appoint new officials.

He asked all parties involved in the legal dispute over the restructuring of the IEBC to reach an agreement out of court.

“I have seen some people blaming the government. This is a law abiding country. When there is a restraining order, the government cannot do anything. Therefore, we are asking those who filed the cases to reach an agreement out of court so that we can continue with the process of restructuring the IEBC,” Kindiki said.
