Migori – At least three people have been confirmed dead in Migori county following heavy rains.
How people have died in Migori floods
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Migori county's chief executive officer for environment and disaster management, Julius Awuor Nyerere, said 95 households have been left homeless following the heavy rain witnessed in the lake area since mid-November.
Nyerere said the county is ready to help flood victims, especially in Uriri and Nyatike sub-counties.
“We have received 3 cases of deaths and, 39 and 56 displaced households in Uriri and Nyatike respectively,” Nyerere said.
Among the dead is a five-year-old child who drowned while playing in Nyangubo area and a truck driver who drowned in the Masungura bridge.
“We managed to retrieve the body of a five-year-old boy who drowned while playing in Nyangubo area, a lorry driver who drowned at Masungura Bridge in Kuria with an unknown man,” the county official said.
He called on residents from flood-prone areas such as Nyatike and Uriri sub-county to be alert and inform the disaster response team through the alert channel issued in case of an emergency.
In Nyatike, flood affected areas include Kabuto, Nyora, and Angugo, and residents have been urged to move to elevated areas or evacuation centers designated by the county government.
“Our evacuation center is nearing completion in Ageng'a kwa Nyatike, but for now, we are still using chiefs' camps and churches,” CECM added.
Nyerere also revealed that the county hired divers who are still searching for three bodies that were found around Kao beach in Kacholla ward, Nyatike sub-county.

At the same time, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Raymond Omollo announced that 12 people have died in the floods that continue to affect parts of the country.
He also said that more than 3,500 households have lost their homes, while many families have been destroyed by the unprecedented heavy rains.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 3, Ogenya, Kadibo Sub-County, Omollo emphasized the government's commitment to help the affected communities.
He noted that teams from various disaster response agencies, including the Kenya Red Cross and the National Disaster Operations Centre, are working hard to mitigate the effects of the disaster.
He added that efforts to deal with them are focused on protecting lives and bringing stability to the affected areas.
