The Secretary General of the State Department of Citizen Services, Julius Bitok, has defended the government's move to increase fees for obtaining national IDs, birth and death certificates.
While appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Legislation, Bitok claimed that the government engaged in public participation across the country.
“We went to the field, and we held 820 public participation meetings about Maisha Namba, we have reports about what Kenyans said. This is very important for the security of our nation; this ID is safe and cannot be changed; it is very common. secure card, ” Bitok insisted, as reported by Citizen Digital.
What are the new fees for IDs, birth and death certificates?
According to a gazette notice dated Monday, November 6, 2023, the new registration of births and deaths will cost Kenyans KSh 200, up from KSh 50.
Kenyans applying for an identity card will pay KSh 300, which was previously free.
The Registration of Persons (Amendment) Act sets KSh 1,000 per person for duplicating or changing an identity card, for changing identity details, identity reports, civil servant cards, and staff badges of public officials.
“We charge KSh 1,000 for correcting mistakes; this is because there are many attempts to change documents fraudulently. it is also a matter of national security to prevent someone from trying to cheat the system to change their information,” Bitok explained.
The interior ministry also increased the cost of late registration of birth certificates from KSh 150 to KSh 500, citing inflation.

MPs reject the ID fee, death and birth certificates
The Select Committee on Legislation, led by Ainabkoi Member of Parliament, Samuel Chepkonga, wants the Ministry of Home Affairs to revoke the new standards, noting that they contained many errors.
The committee ordered that they be deleted to ensure compliance with the law.
“You may need to republish and cancel what you've already given because considering what it is, it may be very difficult to achieve the intended goal,” Chepkonga said.
What are the new passport fees?
The government also revised the costs of applying for passports.
Kenyans applying for a passport must pay KSh 7,500 for a 34-page document. This cost KSh 4,500.
A 50-page passport that used to cost KSh 6,000 will now cost Kenyans KSh 9,5000. A 66-page Kenyan passport that used to cost KSh 7,500 will now cost KSh 12,500, a significant increase of 5,000.
