1. The Standard

The daily reported President William Ruto's “bad-spirited” remarks aimed at his critics, as well as threats from Minister of Mines Hassan Joho, could signal a new strategy for Kenya First to deal with growing opposition.

Ruto's remarks have drawn criticism from leaders and citizens alike, with some accusing him of dismissing legitimate concerns.

The president was not alone in his fiery words. Minister of Mines Hassan Joho, one of Raila Odinga's former allies who joined the Cabinet following the reshuffle, vowed to crack down on critics of the administration, especially those on social media.

His remarks caused a stir on social media and leaders including ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

Lawyer Donald Kipkorir also criticized the behavior of ODM members in the government, noting that their behavior reflected badly on Kenya Kwanza's administration.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance John Mbadispeaking in his constituency last week, caused more controversy by announcing that ODM does not need a candidate in the 2027 presidential election.

While the President initially described himself as a “listening leader” during his State of the Union address last month, his recent outbursts have led some to speculate that his administration is increasingly defensive in the face of growing criticism.

2. Daily Nation

The publication reported the contents of four articles and interviews with a colleague to paint a picture of the ordeal experienced by a university student who reportedly jumped to his death from an 11-storey building in Nairobi.

Benedict Mberesero, 21, a second year student at the United States International University (USIU)-Africa in Nairobi, was found dead near the gate of the hostel at 4:30 yesterday morning, according to a police report.

Police have determined the initial cause of death, citing statements made by the victim himself, his mother, brother and sister.

CCTV footage taken from the area shows Mberesero, a citizen of Tanzania who was studying for a Bachelor of Arts, Culture and Film, leaving his room on the seventh floor to the 11th floor of the building around 3 o'clock in the morning. The guards found his body on the ground in the morning.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department Kasarani (DCI) who visited the scene said Mberesero had fractured his skull, legs and arms.

Head of DCI of Kasarani Justus Ombati said crime scene investigators have found the five-page document.

The police have also recorded a statement from a female student who was among the last people to be with the student before his death.

An official familiar with the investigation said the student told investigators that Mberesero showed signs of being disturbed.

3. Nation Today

The Kiswahili newspaper reported that MPs have vowed to repeal regulations that set high costs for obtaining and changing national ID cards, as well as registering births and deaths, citing the exclusion of the public and many errors in the drafting process.

Member of Parliament for Ainabkoi, Samuel Chepkong'a, who is the chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly, presented the position of the committee to the Minister of Immigration, Julius Bitok.

The meeting was called following complaints from committee members about the fees imposed by the new regulations.

Chepkong'a noted that the proposed Maisha Namba ID, which the government plans to launch, was not included in the regulations.

Rules for Registration of People (Amendment) and Rules for Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) introduced by the former Minister of Interior Prof. Kithure Kindiki, were published and implemented immediately, causing panic among the people.

Chepkong'a did not hesitate to tell PS Bitok that the regulations would need to be republished, as their current format made implementation difficult.
