Nakuru – Proceedings in the county assembly were abruptly suspended on Tuesday, November 26, following a physical altercation between the County Members of Parliament (MCAs).
Why did Nakuru county MCAs fight?
The dispute broke out shortly after Speaker Joel Karuri announced a change in the leadership of the Parliament, and appointed him MCA of Keringet Ward William Mutai as the new Majority Leader.
The decision was met with strong opposition from the MCAs wing, thus creating protest the edge that turned into a brawl.
While the chaos continued, the MCA of Amaina Paul Warigi was hit with an egg on the neck, an incident that increased the tension in the room. Some MCAs walked out of the parliament to avoid the volatile situation.
Speaking after the incident, Warigi condemned the act and emphasized that such arguments are not suitable for leaders.
“When the speaker was making an announcement, one MCA hit me on the head with an egg, I was in front, you can see the effect, we as leaders with good reputation should not reach this stage,” Warigi said.
Another MCA attributed the tension to outside interference, claiming the party headquarters was manipulating political influence.
“This has been a political battle. We have been working together as a team, but recently it has become clear that the struggle is coming from the party headquarters pushing each other,” MCA said.
The disruption forced Speaker Karuri to temporarily suspend the mid-morning session as MCAs protested the leadership change.
