Kirinyaga: Residents of Ngurubani are mourning after two students were hit and killed by a speeding van on the Mwea-Embu highway on Tuesday, November 26.
How did the Mwea-Embu highway accident happen?
The sad incident happened when a car that was speeding towards Nairobi, passed a car stopped at a road block and collided with a motorcycle that had two small boys.
The chief police officer of Mwea Mashariki sub-county, Mohammed Jarso, told Citizen Digital that one student died at the scene, while another died while receiving treatment at the Mwea Mission Hospital.

The chief police officer in the sub-county of Mwea Mashariki Mohammed Jarso said that the driver of the car fled the scene after the accident. However, the car was later found parked two kilometers away from the accident site.
“He left the car two kilometers away from the accident site,” Jarso said.
According to a local resident, the two children, aged 12 and 7, attended Ngurubani Primary School and Thiba Primary School, respectively.
The driver of the car has not yet been detained, but the police have launched a manhunt to arrest him.
Residents of the area have condemned the reckless driving of lorries along the highway, saying that this is not the first time such vehicles have been involved in accidents.

In a separate incident, on Friday, September 13, six school-going children were knocked down by a speeding Probox van at Wiitu Shopping Centre, Kitui.
Ititha County Deputy Commissioner Vincent Loctary Lomachary said those affected included three students from Kyaoni Primary School and three from Kyaoni Secondary School.
According to the deputy commissioner of the county, the students were knocked down by a Probox car while they were crossing the road at around 12:20 in the morning. Lomachary said the preliminary results of the police showed that the Probox was speeding at the time of the accident.
The driver of the Probox fled the scene of the accident before surrendering at the Mutomo Police Station.
