A Twitter user, identified as Kores, shared the news on social media, causing a stir as Kenyans flocked to his X account to comment on the allegations.

“BREAKING: The outgoing Chairperson of the African Union Commission, HE Moussa Faki Mahamat has endorsed Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti to run for the AUC seat,” X's statement said.

Some users shared a screenshot of a Mauritian newspaper with the headline, “Moussa Faki Supports Djibouti's AUC Candidate.”

The question remains: Has Moussa Faki really endorsed the Djibouti candidate? If so, it marks a setback for Raila's big ambitions in the continent.

Has Moussa Faki endorsed Djibouti's AUC candidate?

The ongoing debate on X caught the attention of Faki's spokesperson Ebba Kalondo.

In a short statement that TUKO.co.ke read, Kalondo used social media to deny the claims, calling them false.

At one point, he directly responded to a Twitter user who said Raila is facing a big backlash after Faki announced his endorsement of his claim to be the Djibouti candidate.

Kalondo criticized the user while claiming that he does not speak on behalf of the African Union and should not make such claims.

On Thursday, May 9, Raila met with Chairman Faki at the KICC during the African Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit.

The meeting was held as Raila sought support to succeed Moussa Faki as the next AUC chairman. He announced his interest in the position on Thursday, February 15.

In a photo shared on his X account, which was Twitter, Raila is seen exchanging pleasantries with Faki, whose term ends in January 2025.
