- Elias Mutugi Njeru, accused of stabbing his girlfriend Florence Wanjiku Gichohi, was released on KSh 200,000 cash bail
- The businessman and a strong believer of Jesus Compassion Ministry in Nakuru denied the charge of attempted murder
- Chief Magistrate Daisy Mose instructed Njeru not to interfere with the investigation or contact the victim
Elias Mutugi Njeru, a Nakuru businessman who is alleged to have stabbed his girlfriend, Florence Wanjiku Gichohi, several times, has been released on cash bail of KSh 200,000 or an alternative bond of KSh 500,000.
The Jesus Compassion Ministry member appeared before Chief Magistrate Daisy Mose at the Molo Law Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted murder on Monday, November 23.
Why was Elias Njeru granted bail?
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the court granted bail, citing the lack of basic reasons for the prosecution to deny his release.
Magistrate Mose, however, issued strict conditions, warning Njeru against interfering with the investigation or approaching the complainant.
“The accused has been ordered not to interfere with the ongoing investigation, and is not to go anywhere near the complainant,” he said.
The incident, which has drawn public attention, happened in the couple's rented house in Olive, Nakuru, reported after domestic disputes.
Njeru surrendered at the Nakuru Police Station, accompanied by his lawyer, before being re-arrested and detained at the Menengai Police Station while investigations continue.
The case will be mentioned on December 9.
Why did Elias Njeru allegedly attack Florence Wanjiku?
As previously reported, the knife attack reportedly happened at their home in Rongai, Nakuru.
Speaking from Optimum Hospital, where he is receiving treatment, Wanjiku explained in detail the allegations that led to the attack.
He claimed that the incident happened after their conversation about their business and personal matters at the entertainment hall.
Wanjiku further described their strained relationship, noting his failed attempts to end the union; Njeru allegedly refused to accept rejection.
Police investigations into the case are ongoing.
Following the attack, many Kenyans including the governor of Kirinyaga Anne Waiguru and actress Catherine Kamau have joined the call for justice for Wanjiku as concerns grow about cases of murder of women.
