- It has now emerged that the arrest and deportation of Kizza Besigye from Nairobi to Kampala was facilitated by the Kenyan security authorities
- Uganda's Minister of Information and Communications Chris Baryomunsi revealed that the Ugandan officials were in contact with their Kenyan counterparts
- Nairobi Chief Secretary for Foreign Affairs Korir Sing. 'oei had confirmed that Kenya was not involved in the plot against Besigye
Minister of Information and Communication of Uganda Chris Baryomunsi said that government officials in Nairobi were fully involved in arresting Kizza Besigye.
Did Kenya help Besigye's arrest?
Speaking to NBS TV of Kampala on Friday, November 22, Baryomunsi said that Ugandan security officials could not come to Kenya without the knowledge of the authorities in that country.
He said the officers were in contact with their Kenyan counterparts throughout Besigye's arrest and transfer to Kampala.
“Besigye was arrested, and the Ugandan government was communicating with the Kenyan government. Otherwise, how would you arrest someone in the middle of Nairobi and bring him back to Uganda, through the airport or even by land, without the full knowledge and support of the government there in Kenya,” said the minister.
The minister added that the intelligence reports that Ugandan officials had could not allow them to wait for Besigye's return to Kampala.
“There must be a reason why the security agencies arrested him,” he said.
The minister's revelation came after Kenya denied being involved in Besigye's arrest.
Secretary General of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing'oei said the Kenyan government has no reason to be part of the miseries befalling the opposition leader in Uganda.
Sing'oei gave an example of Kenya's human rights record, adding that the authorities in Nairobi were not aware of Besigye's presence in the country.
Why was Kizza Besigye arrested?
The politician was brought before a military court in Kampala on Wednesday, November 20.
Besigye and his partner Haji Obeid Lutale were charged at the Makindye High Military Court in Kampala with illegal possession of arms and ammunition following their arrest.
The prosecution told the court that Besigye and Lutale, on November 16, while at Riverside House, Nairobi, were found in possession of eight illegal pistol rounds, which are normally the monopoly of the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF).
The prosecution also claimed that the veteran opposition leader and Lutale held meetings in Nairobi, Athens, and Geneva to request support for equipment and to identify military targets in Uganda with the intention of affecting the security of the Ugandan army.
