- Member of Parliament for Suna East Junet Mohamed defended Toto saying that he does not see any harm in his action because that is how things should be
Women's representative of Bomet Linet Toto sparked a debate in Parliament on Tuesday, November 19, after kneeling in front of Sotik Member of Parliament Francis Sigei while he was addressing him during the parliamentary session.
How did MPs react to Toto's kneeling action?
Toto's gesture, which may seem harmless, was not well received by the female MPs present in the Parliament.
For example, MP for Mbita Millie Odhiambo he wondered why Toto felt it was appropriate to kneel down to MP Sigei when he was addressing him.
“Mr. Speaker, my concern is that Mr. Toto is kneeling, I know that the member he is talking to is a respectable and old man, but why should he kneel?” he questioned.
Fighting to hold back his laughter, he said that everyone in Parliament was right, suggesting that Toto had no obligation to kneel.
“Like it's culturally respectful, but not right,” the MP added.
Coming to Toto's defense, Suna East Member of Parliament and Minority Leader Junet Mohamed argued that there is nothing wrong with his actions.
Junet added that Toto had recently returned from Ugandawhere women usually kneel before men, suggesting that he may have started the practice there.
“That's how it should be Mr. Speaker. That's an easy thing Mr. Speaker,” Junet said.
Kisii Member of Parliament Dorice Donya expressed displeasure with Junet's remarks, explaining that she may be taken seriously and that husbands of female MPs can expect them to start kneeling when addressing them.
“You will be destroying our marriages, Mr. Speaker. It is men who should bring women to their knees, not the other way around. In this 21st century, we do not deserve to be told what to do,” Donya said.
