The Archbishop of Nairobi Philip Anyolo had gifted a Mitsubishi Pajero worth KSh 4 million which was awarded to the President William Ruto when he was installed as the Archbishop of Kisumu Catholic Diocese in 2019.
Explaining his actions, Anyolo said he did not need the car as he was already satisfied with the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 he was gifted by the believers of Poisonous earlier that year.
Instead of returning the car to Ruto, Anyolo revealed that he gave it to an institution that could benefit from it, absolving himself of blame.
What did Raila say about Anyong'o's car gift?
Reported by Citizen Digital, The action caused a political uproar, while the leader of Azimio Raila Odinga claiming that the car was obtained through the proceeds of corruption.
Raila questioned how Ruto, a former deputy president, was able to fund lavish donations to churches from his known salary. He also claimed that Pope Francis instructed Anyolo to return the car.
How did Ruto respond to Raila's claims?
Reacting strongly, Ruto dismissed Raila's claims as “desperate lies” and defended his donation, insisting that the car was a genuine gift meant to help the church.
According to him, the sports car was bought at the request of the chairman of the Catholic parliament.
“Deceptive as always uttering outright lies. The gift of the car was bought by Christian leaders including the former president Uhuru Kenyatta and myself at the request of the chairman of the parliament of the Catholic church. It is understandable that empowering the church offends witches and the evil spirits they worship. “Satan be defeated!” He said.
The Catholic Church rejected Ruto's donation of KSh 5.6m
At the same time, an answer emerged following Archbishop Anyolo's decision to return President Ruto's donation of KSh 5.6 million to St. Anne and Joachim Catholic Church in Soweto.
Similarly, Governor Johnson Sakaja's donation of KSh 200,000 to the choir and PMCs was also rejected.
The archbishop clarified that the donations from the politicians violated the church's directives regarding gifts.
