A student who was reported missing for 28 days in the mountains, recounts how he ate a snail

Where is Mount Kwaara?

Joel left Bagara Secondary School in a group of 102 other students and teachers for a school visit, but sadly he never returned.

According to the school, when they started climbing Mt. Kwaara, Arusha, Tanzaniathey were divided, and some of them were lost.

“We were climbing a mountain and when we got to Chokaa area I told the teacher that I was tired and I wanted to rest, the teacher told me to stay alone,” said Joel.

“After a while I started climbing alone and met another group that also got lost, I had stomach problems and when I went to help myself I realized that my friends had already left, the first night I was very scared,” he added.

How did Joel live on the mountain?

According to the 14-year-old, his throat became dry after asking for help non-stop for seven days.

For three days Joel ate mandazi, juice and chips that their teacher had cooked for them. From the sixth day, Joel ate only leaves and snail shells.

He would also drink from the streams he found in the area.

“I didn't give up, when I climbed the mountain, I could see people's houses in the distance and I wanted to get to them,” said Joel.

“Every time I met a snake, I just stopped and let it pass, the more I got lost, the more I got tired and finally got a stick to help me walk. At night I just slept and cleared my mind until the next morning,” the young man said.

Why has Joel refused to go back to school?

Joel said he never cried the whole time but just remembered his mother, who he last saw the day before they left for the trip.

In an earlier interview, his father said they missed him, and he was losing hope of finding his son.

“One day ants surrounded me and really bit me, which forced me to climb a tree, in the morning I walk, in the evening I sleep, on the 28th day I followed the water canal. , hoping to meet someone and finally, I met a boy who took me to a nearby village,” Joel said.

Joel said some of the teachers who accused him of not climbing the mountain only wanted to smear his name, and he vowed never to return to school.

“My mother is in the process of getting me another school,” he said.
