Nairobi – Meg Whitman, the outgoing US Ambassador to Kenya, has officially announced her resignation after serving for almost two years.
In a statement released on Wednesday, November 13, Whitman revealed that he submitted his resignation letter to the President Joe Bidenmarking the end of his tenure in Kenya.
“Today, I announced to my team at the US Embassy that I have submitted my letter of resignation to President Biden. It has been an honor and a great opportunity to serve the American people by strengthening our partnership with Kenya,” Whitman shared his heartfelt message seen by TUKO.co.ke

He took pride in leading a people-centered agenda aimed at saving lives but also worked to increase security and create economic opportunities for Kenyans and Americans.
“From providing emergency funding to mitigate the disaster of floods in 2023, to the ongoing fight against malaria, HIV, and MPOX, the US government is prioritizing the health and well-being of our friends in Kenya,” he said.
Why Whitman has resigned
Whitman also took pride in Kenya's high profile as America's first major non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa, deepening ties between the two nations.
“This year, the United States elevated Kenya as its first major non-NATO Partner in sub-Saharan Africa, demonstrating the importance our countries place on standing side by side to protect our shared democratic values and enhance security,” Whitman explained.
In addition to economic initiatives, Whitman also highlighted improvements in consular services, which saw a sharp decrease in wait times for nonimmigrant visa appointments.
Whitman admitted that he served at the request of the President of the United States and expressed confidence that the strong partnership between the two countries will continue to flourish.
“Like all American ambassadors, I serve at the request of the President. The American people have spoken, and the new President will be sworn in in January. I wish him success and his new team,” he said and noted that the embassy will continue to work well under the leadership of Ambassador Marc Dillard.
Whitman resigns amid calls for his resignation
Earlier, Whitman responded to the growing criticism online following the victory of Donald Trump in the 2024 US Presidential Election.
He faced turmoil on social media, with some Kenyans asking him to resign due to his close relationship with the President's administration William Ruto.
Whitman remained defiant and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing America's shared goals of increased prosperity, security, and respect for democratic values in Kenya.
