Zhuhai, China – A 62-year-old man, identified only as Fan, drove his car into a crowd of people exercising at a stadium in Zhuhai, southern China, on Monday, November 11.

The tragic incident left 35 people dead and 43 others injured, and the driver is now hospitalized under strict police supervision.

What caused the tragic accident in Zhuhai?

Preliminary investigations indicate that Fan, who was found injured in his car, acted maliciously due to confusion over the division of property in his recent divorce, according to a report by abcNEWS.

Photos and videos showing the chaotic situation of people lying on the ground injured and a car running away were widely shared on Chinese social media.

According to NPR, hundreds of rescue workers from Zhuhai and Guangdong provinces responded, along with more than 300 health workers from five hospitals working tirelessly to treat the victims.

In a touching display of remembrance, candles and flowers were placed at the scene of the tragedy by Tuesday evening.

About 30 people gathered at the entrance to the sports center to pay their respects, while delivery drivers stopped to add wreaths to the growing array of floral tributes.

What did President Xi say about the Zhuhai accident?

Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke about the incident in a statement on Tuesday evening, November 12, calling for the perpetrator to be severely punished according to the law.

He urged local governments to intensify preventive measures to address potential risks, prevent major incidents, and manage conflicts immediately.
