Kenya Newspapers, November 8: Kalonzo to Form New Political Alliance with Gachagua Before 2027

On Friday, November 8, Kenyan newspapers reported on the imminent political pact between former vice president Kalonzo and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.

Daily newspapers also reported that the National Assembly plans to give President William Ruto a blank check to borrow more than the debt ceiling.

1. The Star

The Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, which gave the United Kenya Kenya a run for its money in the 2022 General Election, is about to collapse.

This happened after President William Ruto joined hands with his political rival Raila Odinga, who was Azimio's flag bearer in the election.

Kalonzo's allies revealed that the new outfit could be ready by Christmas, signaling a new shift in the political landscape in the country.

“We are working on the new alliance and we are looking for new partners. The alliance should be ready by Christmas. Mount Kenya is one of the areas we are going to work with,” Makueni MP Dan Maanzo revealed.

The Majority Leader in Parliament Kimani Ichung'wa wants to adjust the debt level, which the Members of Parliament (MPs) set at 55% of the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Two former National Youth Service (NYS) officials have been found guilty of involvement in fraudulent contracts.

The two, Samuel Wachenje and Hendrick Nyongesa were jailed for 12 years by the Milimani Court.

Wachenje was the finance director, while Nyongesa was the head of procurement when taxpayers lost KSh 791 million in the scam NYS.

“I am sentencing Wachenje and Nyongesa to five years each for breach of trust. Nyongesa has also been sentenced to seven years for forging documents without authority. The sentences will be served concurrently,” Milimani chief judge Wandia Nyamu said.

4. The Standard

Former prime minister Raila Odinga will officially start his campaign for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia today.

Raila's secretariat will launch its mission at the headquarters of the African Union (AU) in the Ethiopian capital.

The secretariat is led by the Secretary General of Foreign Affairs (PS) Korir Sing'oei and former Kenyan ambassador to the United States (USA) Elkanah Odembo.

“The candidate will use the forum to explain his vision and priorities in Africa based on AU Agenda 2063,” the secretariat's statement said.

Djibouti's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahamoud Ali Youssouf is said to be Raila's main opponent in the race.
