Nairobi – The family of prominent People Daily journalist, Henry Waihinya, is seeking urgent financial assistance to cover his mounting hospital bills.
Waihinya, who is currently receiving treatment at the Hospital Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research (KUTRRH), suffered from a health problem and was admitted six weeks ago after showing symptoms that led to the diagnosis of colon cancer.
Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, his daughter, Eunice Waihinya, said her father is expected to undergo the second stage of chemotherapy and is expected to remain in the hospital until he completes this treatment.
“He has stage four colon cancer and it's spreading. He had already had the first rounds of chemotherapy and surgery on September 18th when he was arrested. He has a colostomy bag because he had a colon blockage and they had to cut off part of it—he couldn't pass stool or urine. Injuries were problematic,” he explained.
Waihinya is currently admitted in the men's ward, Yala Ward, bed five.
Speaking from his bed, he expressed his gratitude for any help, saying that some people who promised to help have yet to fulfill their promises.
“They told me to send the necessary documents so we are still waiting for a response. Mediamax knows about my case but action needs to be taken to help me. I am also an award-winning journalist. I won the Reproductive Health Story Award from UNNP and brought credit to the company. I know people they are sad and have problems like this but little by little they fill the fatherhood,” he said.
The family is now looking for cooperation with any organizations to provide necessary equipment such as colostomy bags and arrange home support after he leaves the hospital.
“The doctors said that he cannot stay in the ward for a long time because he can get infected with other diseases. Right now, his condition has improved,” said Eunice.
Despite the assurance, the family, which does not have a permanent income, is worried about the hospital bill which has now reached almost KSh 700,000.
They are calling on anyone who can donate to help them.
Donations to support Henry Waihinya can be sent via M-Money to Eunice Waihinya at number 0723371193.
