Nairobi – President William Ruto He has asked the Judiciary to exercise restraint in its decisions, especially in matters related to government policies, while raising concerns about what he called judicial abuse.
Speaking during an event at the Supreme Court building to mark the 12th anniversary of the establishment of the court on Monday, November 4, Ruto urged the Judiciary Department to avoid interfering with decisions made by other government agencies.
He expressed frustration, questioning how his administration is expected to implement its manifesto if court rulings continue to block policy initiatives.
“What happens to a government that has been elected on the basis of a manifesto? What is the position of the manifesto? A plan that has been voted by millions of Kenyans together with the candidate and the party. What weight does the court attach at any time? Is there a challenge to the manifesto? Ruto said
Ruto claimed that the Judiciary should weigh the public interest and national priorities more carefully instead of, as he put it, “playing at the gallery”. and popular decisions that can undermine the governance vision for the country.
What is Ruto's suggestion about the court overstepping its bounds?
The head of state further complained that some court decisions have not only stopped projects but also cost him politically.
Ruto explained that although he has taken great political risks to find the right thing, he feels the Court's decisions have, at times, hindered these efforts.
“You devote your political capital to doing the right thing, but then the court on the other hand decides to be popular and undermine the agenda you have,” he added.
In recent months, Ruto's administration has faced numerous legal battles, with courts ruling against some of the president's key initiatives, citing issues such as unconstitutionality.
Ruto proposed the introduction of a mechanism to deal with possible judicial abuse, questioning who should hold the Judiciary to account if it oversteps its bounds.
He claimed that in addition to the fact that Executives and Members of Parliament are facing a balance, the Court should also have a system to ensure that it respects the authority of other government agencies.
Ruto accuses the Court of corruption
Earlier, Ruto said his plans to achieve health projects for all and affordable housing are stable and will bear fruit.
Ruto slammed the Judiciary for allegedly perpetuating impunity, saying that some leaders are colluding with the judiciary to stop his development agenda.
He also instructed his executive to disobey orders aimed at disrupting their projects and denying Kenyans development.
