- Kenya's national football team's hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco are slim
- Harambee Stars' two defeats against Cameroon in Group J have put their position in serious trouble
- Kenya will play Zimbabwe and Namibia in their final qualifying games but will rely on Cameroon to help them
The position of Harambee Stars qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco hangs in the balance.
The team suffered a back-to-back defeat against Cameroon during the October International break, leaving them with a huge gap in their position.
A football expert says the national team of Kenya can still qualify after their recent defeat.
Kenya's qualifying campaign
Kenya's AFCON 2025 qualifiers started with a 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe in the country Uganda because the country does not have a stadium that meets FIFA and CAF standards.
They followed that up with a 2-1 win over Namibia. In that game, they survived the attack in the first half but came up short in the second half.
John Avire's free kick gave Kenya the lead before Duke Abuya scored the second goal. Namibia scored a late equalizer.
Engin Firat's side suffered a painful 4-1 defeat in their first match against Cameroon in Yaounde on October 11.
October 14, Nelson Mandela Stadium, Uganda, Indomitable Lions won 1-0, leaving Kenya with four points after four games. Cameroon are at the top with 10 points followed by Zimbabwe with eight points.
Kenya AFCON 2025 Rankings
Harambee Stars will face Zimbabwe and Namibia in their final Group F matches. They must win both matches to qualify for the tournament.
Kenya will have to beat Zimbabwe and hope Cameroon beat them too, so that they have a chance. As things stand, Harambee Stars' hopes of qualifying are not in their hands.
Football analyst Dan Ogega told TUKO.co.ke only that Kenya's main problem is against Cameroon.
“Although it is mathematically possible, our chances of qualifying for AFCON 2025 are very slim after Cameroon's two goals. We struggled against Cameroon because of the lack of experience and the huge talent gap between the two sides. Most of their players live in Europe and are Europe. more experience.”
If Kenya's qualification is to materialise, he feels they should focus on regional competitions.
“We have to focus on being successful in regional tournaments like CECAFA and invitational tournaments to gain the necessary experience that will help us put on a good show come AFCON 2027.”
Kenya has played in two AFCON tournaments in the last 30 years and will host the tournament in 2027, according to Africa News.
Firat will speak about Kenyan football
Originally TUKO.co.ke reported that Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat shared his thoughts on the infrastructure of Kenyan football.
The Turk called on Kenya to lack world-class equipment while speaking ahead of Kenya's match against Zimbabwe.
