- In March 2021, Phyllis Mbayi hit the headlines after getting married to her late boyfriend
- It emerged that prophetess Mary Akatsa had instructed Funyula's bride to see the death of her fiance as graduation
- Mbayi explained that she married the late man because he had promised her a wedding but he died before it took place
On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, TUKO.co.ke published a story of a bride who exchanged wedding rings with a dead groom.
A surprising event happened in Funyula when Beatrice Mbayi went to the altar to marry William Godfrey Mukalama, who was lying in a coffin.
A surprising wedding between a living bride and a dead groom
Clothes were hung on the ground to form a path that would be used by the bride from her home to the tent where the body was placed.
Accompanied by songs and dances, Mbayi played the role of a shy bride as she walked in a dacha towards the corpse of the groom.
“We know that it is not your wish to have a wedding ceremony in this way, but please accept this ring so that you and your wife can continue to be one,” said the man who was leading the ceremony to the groom.
The crowd clapped as the ring was put on the late groom.
After that, the ceremony turned into a funeral, and the groom was buried.
Why Funyula's bride married a dead man
It was learned that there was a lot going on behind the scenes before the funeral due to Mbayi's faith in prophetess Mary Akatsa, popularly known as “Mummy.”
Mbayi, like other followers of that complex religion, had received Akatsa's teachings about seeing death as a stage of graduation.
When William died in his home in Kayole, Mbayi refused to perform an autopsy, claiming that the “mummy” code was against such an act.
TUKO.co.ke sought out Mbayi, who insisted that past events, including his wedding, were over now, and he was moving on with his life.
“I exchanged rings with him because he promised me a wedding this year, but he died before it happened,” he explained.
It is not known if the late husband, being a staunch Catholic, would have accepted the kind of wedding that was done to his body.
