A Kenyan sentenced to prison in 2012 finally leaves Korkoroni as a full-fledged lawyer

Why was Thomas Mutune arrested?

Thomas Mutune was arrested in 2012 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with narcotics worth KSh 5 million.

He was sentenced to prison for drug trafficking, but what he went through as a result of being in prison made him a better person.

Mutune told his exciting story after being released from Prisons Thika being an independent person and a qualified lawyer.

“I went to the Industrial Area remand, and from there, I went through the trial, which finally convicted me and sentenced me to 30 years in prison. I went to the Maximum Committee Prison,” he participated.

What Mutune experienced in the Central Prison of Kamiti

While he was serving, a UK-based NGO sponsored his law studies through an online program that trained him as a legal and sign language interpreter.

He appealed to the High Court, which succeeded and saw his term reduced to a decade.

“At the Committee, I found good people and families. I learned new things. The Prison Service of Kenya (KPS) treated me as one of them, molded me, and gave me a chance to study,” he said.

Crime does not pay, Mutune says after being released from prison

Mutune, who will graduate with his law degree this December, expressed deep regret over his past involvement in drug trafficking.

“Crime doesn't pay; it will never play out at the end of the day. However, you gave me another chance to be a different person, and I'm glad I went through this,” he added.

Mutune's vision is to open his own law firm and provide legal assistance to his community and other prisoners looking for a second chance.

“I leave here with knowledge and humility and ready to work with the community,” he explained.

5 officers arrested in relation to Mukuru's murder have been released

In another story, police officers arrested in connection with the escape of Collins Jumaisi, the main suspect in Mukuru's murder, and 12 others were released.

Judge Martha Nanzushi said it was not possible to detain the five officers for more days.

Earlier, the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) had requested that the officers be detained for 14 days.
