Nyeri: Family Seeks Answers After Their 13-Year-Old Daughter Dies at School

According to her father, Angeline spoke to them on the phone, bursting with excitement as she talked about having a family gathering to celebrate her older sister's recent graduation from College. University of Strathmore.

He remembered their conversation well, explaining that he was very happy and wanted to be home for the party while they were fasting for the holiday.

“That evening, he was in a good mood, and in fact, I remember that there were many times when they told each other how much they loved each other and would see each other in a few days. So there was no complaining that evening about any kind of illness,” he recounted with great sadness.

How did Angeline's parents know that she was hospitalized

However, just hours after her conversation with her family, a call came in the middle of the night about their daughter's well-being.

Angeline's mother, Gladys Moshire, was awakened by a call from the school around 2:30 a.m., informing her that she was very ill and needed immediate treatment.

Shocked and confused, she ran to Othaya hospital, where her daughter had been taken. There, he met the bad news that Angeline was already gone.

“When I arrived, I found the child sleeping and vomiting, I asked him if there was a doctor attending to him, but the doctor told me, 'The child was already dead when he got here,'” remembered Gladys as she cried.

What happened to Angeline before death

A WhatsApp message from the school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) chairman revealed that a classmate noticed that Angeline had a problem and informed the matron.

The matron then alerted the principal, who quickly took action, mobilizing his assistants to take Angeline to the hospital in a private car.

The family began to question the events leading up to Angeline's death, with confusing information leaving them wondering if she died at school or on the way to the hospital.

They also suspect that there may be a lack of transparency from the school management on what happened.

“We must go and ask the doctor if he has written a report on why the child died,” his mother complained. But when she asked the doctor, he replied, I cannot write a report because the child was brought here when he was already deceased. . I suggest you contact the teacher about this case.”

What are the needs of Angeline's family?

For Angeline's father, the way the school is handling her case is causing great concern, questioning where she had to find information about her illness on WhatsApp.

“So you can imagine if I knew the details of my daughter's death, a small part wants us to know through a WhatsApp group like anyone else. I believe even now she would have been a scapegoat, a small discussion would have taken place. Now here, we are talking about my daughter,” he said, his voice shaking with sadness.

The bereaved family is now calling for a full investigation, demanding transparency and accountability.

“How I can't change, the death of my girl, I can't and that's the truth, but he also said and I should have full information from the beginning to the end,” said the sad father.

Angeline's body lies in the Mary Immaculate Hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem which her parents hope will shed light on the tragedy.
