Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei's daily newspaper has bowed to public pressure after thousands of Kenyans rejected his Bill, which sought to increase the term limits of the President and other elected officials.

Speaking at the end of a public participation forum, where Kenyans strongly opposed the Bill, Cherargei agreed to revisit the provision.

“I completely agree with you, and I am waiting for the report of the committee, as there is an official procedure for this,” he said.

By the end of the public participation period on Friday, 240,000 Kenyans had submitted written submissions, while tens of others made oral presentations during the conference held at the KICC in the city Nairobi.

The outspoken MP had faced a major backlash over the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2024, which, among other things, proposed extending the term of elected officials from the current five years to seven.

Cherargei said that, although Kenya's progress has often been hindered by ongoing politics, the effectiveness of a leader should not be determined solely by their time in power.
