Nairobi – Majority Leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung'wah has dismissed the Nandi senator's proposal Samson Cherargei of extending the presidential term from five to seven years.
In a post shared on X on Wednesday, October 23, Ichung'wah announced a firm stance on the debate that has sparked outrage.

Member of Parliament Kikuyu he said that the bill was “dead on arrival”, adding that Cherargei should not waste time or resources to push for the law.
“Cherargei's legislative proposal on term limits is dead on arrival, period. He should save his own time, that of other Senators, and taxpayers' money,” Ichung'wah said.
What does the Cherargei bill contain?
Cherargei's bill, which was presented in the Senate, seeks to amend Article 136 of the Constitution to extend the president's term from the current five-year limit.
Additionally, the bill proposes to extend the terms of Members of Parliament (MPs), senators, governors, and members of county assemblies (MCAs) to seven years.
“The bill proposes to amend Article 136 of the Constitution, which provides for the election of the President, to increase the term of office from five years to seven years,” you say the bill.
Senator of Kiambu Karungo Thang'wa opposed Cherargei's proposal by advocating the reduction of the presidential term limit to four years.
Thang'wa said that the four-year term would improve accountability, encourage political participation, and create opportunities for new leadership in the country.
He emphasized that his proposed term limit will strengthen democratic principles in the country and enable citizens to hold their leaders accountable on a regular basis.
