- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized President William Ruto for being cruel to him
- He compared himself to Kenya's second liberation hero, Kenneth Matiba, whom former President Daniel Arap Moi imprisoned
- Gachagua arrived at the hospital as the Deputy President but was allowed to leave the hospital as an ordinary citizen following his dismissal
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized President William Ruto for keeping him aside and pressuring him politically.
The veteran politician made the shocking revelation during a public address a few hours after he was discharged from the hospital.
Broken relationship between Ruto and Gachagua
Gachagua drew parallels between his current political situation and that of the second liberation hero KenyaKenneth Matiba.
Matiba was a victim of political injustice under the administration of the former President Daniel arap Moi.
“For the last year, it's been very difficult for me. When I look at it, it's history repeating itself,” he said.
Gachagua added that Ruto he wanted to take him in the way that President Moi went through Matiba by pushing him to the edge.
He compared his plight to that of Matiba, who was a leading figure in the multi-party democracy movement in Kenya but suffered greatly under Moi's rule.
How Moi harassed Kenneth Matiba
Matiba was detained and subjected to intense political pressure, which eventually caused him to suffer a debilitating stroke, from which he never fully recovered.
Gachagua, who was once considered a close ally of the head of state, has fallen from grace in the past few weeks.
The tension within the ruling administration caused irreparable cracks that could have a major impact on the political career of the former Vice President.
“I have stood firm, but it was not easy,” Gachagua added, without giving specifics about the nature of the alleged pressure from the President.
MPs approve the appointment of Kithure Kindiki as the new deputy president
Rigathi Gachagua insists that he is still the Deputy President despite being expelled from the government
Gachagua's remarks come at a time when Kenyans are preparing to replace him, the former Minister of Internal Affairs Kithur Kindiki.
This is after the National Assembly approved Kindiki after Ruto appointed him as the new deputy president.
A total of 236 members of parliament voted on Friday afternoon, October 18, to approve the nomination, paving the way for Kindiki's swearing-in.
