President William Ruto has appointed the Minister of Internal Security Kithur Kindiki as the new vice president.
Who is the new deputy president of Kenya?
Kindiki's appointment came after the Senate approved the removal of Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday, October 17.
The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula informed Members of Parliament (MPs) about Kindiki's appointment on Friday, October 18, in the morning.
“I have received a message from the president regarding the appointment of Professor Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacant position in the office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.
“Article 149(1) of the constitution states that within 14 days after the Vice President vacancy occurs, the President will appoint a person to fill the vacancy, and the Parliament will hold a referendum within 60 days after receiving it. so,” Wetangula said during a live session in parliament.
What is the value of Kithure Kindiki?
When reviewing the position of Minister of Internal Affairs, Kindiki revealed that he was worth KSh 694 million, up from KSh 544 million.
This represented an increase of KSh 150 million in 21 months compared to when he was appointed in 2022.
Kindiki disclosed his source of income as a matter of law.
“I said at that time that I am doing business now that today even if I am not working on the law, it is working and a lot of income has come from it. It is still alive and managed by other people,” he told the Parliamentary Nomination Committee.
What experience does Kindiki have?
Following widespread protests against his administration, the President William Ruto he dissolved his Cabinet on July 11 and appointed some members including Kindiki to rejoin.
The 52-year-old has 26 years of experience as a career lawyer in law, academia and politics.
He dismissed allegations that he amassed his wealth from government tenders.
“I have not benefited from any inappropriate business; I have not done any business with the government, any tender by myself, agency, relatives or anyone,” he explained.
Why was Gachagua removed?
Gachagua was accused of violating articles of the constitution, misconduct and undermining national institutions.
The Senate announced his impeachment, and declared the office of DP vacant.
The impeachment was conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions, including articles 145 (2) and 150 (1) (b) of the constitution of Kenya.
