President William Ruto has appointed Internal Security Minister Kithure Kindiki to the position of Deputy President following the removal of Rigathi Gachagua and the Senate
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula acknowledged receiving official communication from Senate Speaker Amason Kingi regarding Gachagua's removal.
Ruto sent Kindiki's nomination to the National Assembly for consideration, with consultations on his nomination expected soon.

Nairobi – President William Ruto has appointed the Minister of Internal Security, Professor Kithur Kindikifor the position of Deputy President following the removal of Rigathi Gachagua.
The office of the Deputy President remained vacant after the Senate approved the removal of Gachagua on Thursday, October 18, 2024.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula acknowledged receiving information from Senate Speaker Amason Kingi about Gachagua's removal.
“I have received a message from the Senate regarding their decision to remove HE Rigathi Gachagua, the Deputy President of the Republic Kenya. The message says that the Senate investigated the matter in accordance with section 151(b) of the Constitution as read with section 145 and Standing Rule 79 of the Standing Rules of the Senate, and after giving the Deputy President the opportunity to be heard, on Thursday , October 17, 2024, they agreed with the charges to remove the Deputy President,” said Wetang'ula.
Ruto chose Kindiki
In a quick move to fill the vacancy, Ruto submitted Kindiki's nomination to the National Assembly for consideration. On Friday, October 19, 2024, the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula announced the President's decision to the members of parliament, laying the groundwork for the debate on Kindiki's nomination.

“Following the provisions of Standing Order 42/1, I want to report to parliament that this morning I have received a message from the Honorable President regarding the appointment of Professor Kithure Kindiki EGH to fill the vacancy that has arisen in the Office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya following the removal of the former owner of that office,” said Wetang'ula.
Kindiki, who has served as Interior Minister and has been widely praised for his leadership, is now expected to take up the country's second-highest post, pending parliamentary approval.
The removal of Gachagua has been officially published
As previously reported, the Senate officially published a newspaper advertisement about Gachagua's removal, announcing that the office of the Deputy President is now vacant. His removal was done in accordance with the constitutional provisions, including Article 145(2) and 150(1)(b) of the Constitution of Kenya. Gachagua was removed for violating constitutional provisions, misconduct, and weakening national institutions. Speaker Amason Jeffah Kingi officially announced the position in a Gazette Announcement on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
