TAMWA and TCRA are organizing the 'Samia Kalamu Awards' – HabariMpya

The Tanzania Women Journalists Association (TAMWA) in collaboration with the Tanzania Communications Authority (TCRA) have organized the Samia Kalamu Award 'Samia Kalamu Awads' for Journalists writing development news in various fields.

The motto of the Awards is Patriotism is the Ingenuity with the aim of stimulating the writing of researched articles about development, responsibility, patriotism and building the brand and image of the Nation.

Speaking when announcing the awards, in Dar es Salaam, the Executive Director of TAMWA Dr. Rose Reuben said the awards will involve content published through newspapers, radio, television, online platforms and government information officers.

“These awards organized by TAMWA and TCRA will involve news published between January 1 and October 26, 2024.

The award is to inspire, encourage and promote the scope of processing, advertising and publishing local content through the media”, said Dr. Rose.

“Due to the development of technology and globalization, journalism in the country has been focusing on entertaining, informing while the writing of educational articles is on a small scale, but also the media in the country has been promoting foreign content that does not meet the needs of the Tanzanian audience.

He said that due to the lack of understanding, TAMWA in collaboration with TCRA decided to provide training to journalists, broadcasters, editors, managers, information officers, media owners, lecturers and online content creators around 2,054 across the country for a period of three months this year 2024.

However, he said along with the training, they have thought it is good to give awards to journalists and the media who have been making efforts to write, publish and advertise local content, especially articles that have been researched and analyzed that are productive for Tanzanians.

“These awards have been named the Samia Kalamu Awards to recognize and honor the history of getting the first female President in Tanzania.

The awards are expected to be given in November 2024 in three categories which are National Special Awards, Media Awards and Sectoral Awards.

The criteria for participation is that the competing articles should be about development issues that affect the lives of citizens and the opportunities available from the various projects implemented and have four sources in the articles

He has said that the articles have been published, broadcast or broadcast in Kiswahili or English language in the local or foreign media in Tanzania.

In addition, the author should be Tanzanian and the article should be researched and analyzed in detail. The news sources should not be less than four and the articles should not have been previously competed for in other awards.

He said that considering the protection of intellectual property rights, all the works submitted for the competition must be unique and follow the copyright conditions of the author and the station that announced it.

“These awards are unique because all the media will be won, news officers will also compete, so it is an incentive for the media and journalists to work more professionally. They will bring positive results in the media industry.
