Kipyegon Bett: Former U-20 Champion Dies After Long Illness

The world of athletics has found itself in mourning again following the death of Kipyegon Bett on Sunday, October 6.

Bett died at Tenwek Hospital in the County Bometwhere he had been admitted since Monday last week.

How did Kipyegon Bett die?

The bronze medalist at the 2017 World Championships in the 800 meters was ill for a long time.

As reported by NationBett is said to have been vomiting blood after his organs stopped working.

Her sister, Purity Kirui, confirmed the death, saying that Bett passed away on Sunday evening.

Bett was initially treated as a regular patient at AIC Litein Hospital there Kerichobut his condition worsened and he was transferred to Tenwek Hospital.

His body is kept in the mortuary at Soin Sigowet hospital, Sigowet sub-county area.

Who is Kipyegon Bett?

Bett, who died aged 26, led a career that was both highly successful and challenging.

He rose to prominence in youth competitions in his early years of athletics, winning the U20 world 800m title in 2016 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

He moved on to senior competition where he placed third at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, a few months after winning silver as part of the Kenya in the relay race at the World Championships held in Nassau, Bahamas.

Kipyegon Bett's four-year ban

In 2018, Bett suffered a major blow to his career after being banned for four years for using the banned drug Erythropoietin.

He returned briefly in 2022 but participated only once at the Kenya Athletics Federation meet, where he finished third.

At the time, Sky Sports reported that Bett refused to provide a urine sample.

He was previously banned for failing to provide samples for doping tests three times before being handed a four-year ban under the Athletics Integrity Unit's Anti-Doping Regulations.

The 20-year-old Bett refused to agree with the decision, claiming he was resting to recover from an injury.

Death of Kelvin Kiptum

His death is the latest in the list of athletes who have died this year.

He follows the death of the marathon world record holder, Kelvin Kiptum, who died in February after being involved in a road accident near Kaptagat.
