- Police officers were detained with unidentified bodies at the City Mortuary following orders from Governor John Sakaja's office
- According to officials from City Hall, the morgue currently holds 607 bodies, which is more than its capacity of 184.
- A conflict broke out between police officers and Nairobi county officials (kanjos) after they were prevented from leaving the bodies they brought with them
The county government of Nairobi has issued orders to prevent City morgues from accepting unidentified bodies.
On Thursday, October 3, Citizen TV reported that police officers and Nairobi city officials, popularly known as kanjos, clashed outside the gates of the slum for hours.
This is after the police were prevented from leaving unidentified dead bodies following instructions from City Hall.
According to the county, the City morgue is full and currently holds a large number of bodies.
“We have suspended all admissions at the funeral home in Nairobi because it has already exceeded its capacity,” an official from the city hall said.
The police were prevented from leaving the bodies they brought to Mochwari City
The officers had to put the dead body in their car as a result, but when they had nowhere else to take it in the evening, they returned to the morgue.
When the lower officers could not convince the workers to accept the body, Nairobi Police Chief Officer Judith Nyongesa had to intervene, but her efforts were also in vain.
“We can't go around with the body since 9 in the morning, and we took it. Where do we get it, folks, this is the fourth time we've been here. Where do we take the body?
“We took the body to the police station; now we come because the night is with us,” he added.
However, the Nairobi city official refused to allow the officers to enter, saying he followed the instructions of the city's head office.
“We have orders that all unidentified bodies from the police should not be received at the City Mortuary,” Kanjo said.
Therefore, the OCPD called the city hall, hoping that the body agreed, but they also face rejection.
“My brother, I am OCPD; we have been worked on because we have kept the body since morning, and this is the third time I come here and have been stopped,” he said while talking on the phone.
City Mortuary refuses to accept unidentified bodies
However, the office of Governor John Sakaja stressed that after exceeding capacity, mortuary staff will not be able to provide better service to customers until the congestion is removed.
“Instead of having 184 bodies, the city mortuary has 607. Therefore, we cannot provide better service to customers,” a city hall representative said.
The attendants say they cannot lay down unknown bodies for fear of being harmed.
However, the unidentified bodies were later allowed into the morgue after a series of calls to county officials.
Nyongesa pointed out that the county should have written a letter to the police stations so that they know, while noting that the action is a punishment even for the bereaved.
