- President William Ruto criticized the proposed Constitution Amendment Bill seeking to extend the presidential term
- Ruto said the plan threatens the democratic principles that Kenyans fought so hard for
- The bill sponsored by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei aims to increase the presidential term limit from five to seven years
Nairobi – The President's Party William Rutothe United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has distanced itself from the proposal to extend the president's term in office.
In a statement with strong words of the secretary general of UDAHassan Omar, the ruling party rejected the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill to increase the current presidential term from five to seven years.
Omar described the Bill sponsored by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei as an initiative to “the state of being backward, of going backwards and forwards” which threatens the democratic principles fought so hard by the people of Kenya.
“What is alarming is that this crass, misguided and self-serving Bill violates the long-standing desire of the Kenyan people to retire from democratic allegiance to an unaccountable political monopoly. It seeks to deny the people regular opportunities to be accountable for leadership. and exercise power directly,” the statement referred to by Ruto reads.
The ruling party criticized the bill's sponsors, accusing them of failing to appreciate the historical importance of term limits and the institutional need.
“The justices and sponsors of the constitutional amendment bill… have not engaged in sufficient reflection regarding the historical nature, institutional basis, and political significance of term limits,” Omar said.
