Nairobi—President William Ruto has suffered a major blow after the Supreme Court halted the implementation of the new funding model.
On Thursday, October 3, the Supreme Court suspended the new higher education funding model pending a case filed by the Human Rights Commission of Kenya (KHRC) and 3 other plaintiffs to be heard and decided.
In his decision, High Court Judge Chacha Mwita said the case took a long time because the government led by the Attorney General, Education Minister Julius Ogamba and the Kenya Universities Planning Service (KUCPS) were late in submitting their submissions.
“Conservative orders are granted against the respondents from implementing the new education funding model until the hearing and determination of the petition,” said the Judge.
Judge Mwita issued the order following a petition filed by the Kenya Human Rights Commission and the Better Education Working Group.
A new higher education funding system is needed HELB assign student loans according to their families' monthly income.
