A Soldier Who Lost His Wrists to a Teardrop Bomb Blast Speaks: “I Saw Darkness”

How did David Maina lose his hands in a tear gas explosion?

Determined to control the protest, Maina wanted to throw tear gas against the protestors in the city Nairobi when it exploded and cut off his hands.

According to the official, the explosion was an accident, admitting that he could not fully explain how it happened.

He explained that while trying to remove the pin, an unexpected explosion occurred, leaving him in excruciating pain.

“Initially there was a problem of pulling out the pin, when it finally came down, I only saw darkness, I don't know what happened because this is something I have been using since training, I say it was just an accident,” he said in an interview with TV47.

Maina insisted that he never intended to harm innocent Kenyans, explaining that the purpose was only to create a loud sound of the bomb to disperse the protesters.

What did Maina say about her recovery journey?

Maina noted that his family and friends were equally shocked by what they witnessed. He has since received counseling and is in the healing process.

Although he remains dependent in some areas, he holds out hope for a full recovery.

“I bled a lot, if it weren't for the doctors who acted quickly, things would have been different, the wounds are healing and I am in the process of recovery, right now I am dependent in a way but I know, if you give time, things will work out. ok,” the official added.

He mentioned that the doctors will provide him with equipment to help him return to his duties.

Alfred Mutua promises KSh 1m for Maina's treatment

Following the incident, the Minister Alfred Mutua promised KSh 1 million to help the officer's treatment, although this promise has not yet been fulfilled.

Maina remains hopeful that the politician will honor his promise, noting that they have been in contact.

He also thanked his superiors for their support and all the people of good will who helped him, including the successful transfer of his children to higher schools.
