Nairobi – Political activist Morara Kebaso has been released after being detained for several hours following his arrest.
Those officers of DCI they arrested him from his office in Kahawa Sukari on Monday, September 30.
Why was Morara Kebaso arrested?
Morara was brought before the Milimani Court, where he faced charges of cyber harassment under Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Offenses Act.
He was accused of publishing false news about businessman David Langat, claiming to be the President William Ruto he tricked his ex into lending him a large sum of money with the promise of repayment.
“David Morara Kebaso aka Morara Kebaso Snr on September 28, 2024 at an unknown place in the Republic of Kenyatogether with others who were not before the court, while using the named X Corp Account; @MoraraKebasoSnr, knowingly without valid excuse, published false news with content which you knew to be false and intended to defame and defame David Langat,” read the indictment.
Why didn't Morara answer the cybercrime charges?
However, the 28-year-old lawyer-turned-activist pleaded not guilty to the charges as his lawyers claimed that the charges were flawed.
The court later released him on KSh 50,000 cash bail, with a decision expected on October 4.
Kenyans protest demanding Morara's release
Meanwhile, before he was brought to court, a group of Kenyans gathered outside the court to protest Morara's release.
They sang freedom songs, and many others showed their support for the lawyer online.
Several prominent leaders including Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, Willis Otieno and Jeremiah Kioni also attended the court to witness his arraignment.
