According to the Kirinyaga Sub County Police Commander WestMoses Koskei, a milk van driver was traveling from Sagana to Karatina when the accident happened.

“A mother and her 9-year-old son were waiting for the school bus when the driver hit them even though they were in a safe place,” said Koskei.

Residents reported that the vehicle was speeding when the accident occurred. After the collision, the car rolled and sustained damage.

“Accidents on this road are caused by speeding vehicles, and the Chinese contractor has failed to put bumps on this road despite children crossing towards Gacharu, TVETand several elementary schools,” said one resident David Mwangi.

Primary school teacher Joseph Kinyua, who came to pick up the boy, was shocked to find the bodies of the mother and her child lying on the road.

“I couldn't believe it when I saw the bodies of the boy and his mother lying on the road, and I called the director of the school immediately when I was leaving Sagana,” said Kinyua.

What action did the residents of Kirinyaga take following the death of a mother and her son?

Angry residents from Gacharu, Karima, and Kiangwaci blocked the busy highway, demanding to meet the Chinese road contractor.

Police officers struggled to calm the situation while residents wanted to meet the road's contractor.

“We want a contractor to come here, cut the roadblocks and put embankments. We have been writing several letters to him without success,” Kinyua said.

The road was finally opened after the contractor arrived and started building the road embankments.

Kirinyaga West Police Commander Koskei noted that the driver surrendered at Kiangwaci police station, fearing attack by angry residents.

“We have taken the bodies of a 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son to Kibugi Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy, and the car has been towed to the Sagana police station,” said Koskei.
