Former Ruaraka OCS Nahashon Mutua has broken his silence about his life in prison for more than four years since the court Nairobi sentence him to death.
Mutua, who was convicted of murdering a suspect who was detained at a police station, has maintained his innocence, claiming that the case was not properly investigated.
In an interview with Inooro TV, Mutua recalled his time in the police force, stressing that he was a hardworking officer who rose through the ranks to become OCS of Ruaraka Police Station.
He admitted that he had jailed many people during his five-year tenure as Ruaraka OCS, adding that he was just doing his job.
“As the OCS of the Ruaraka Police Station, I was the one who signed the charge sheets for each suspect. Some of them are still in prison, and some of them we met. There are many, and I would not say that God is now punishing me for them because I was imprisoned, I followed the procedures correct,” he insisted.
The former police officer claimed that his case was a revenge by the people he was fighting with due to their criminal activities. “As OCS, I was fierce in the fight against crime in Ruaraka, and this case was turned against me by people whose work I was opposing,” he said.
Nahashon Mutua's experience in prison
Mutua said he still hopes that one day his name will be cleared despite the death sentence given to him.
While in prison, he teaches chemistry to his fellow inmates.
“I always hope that one day I will be free. However, if that doesn't happen, I will still continue to make a positive impact on other prisoners. I am an honest person, and I keep a positive attitude.
“To my family, I hope they are safe. They know I'm here, and they believe I'm innocent. I encourage them to stay strong,” he said.
Nahashon Mutua's death sentence
Mutua was sentenced to death for torturing and killing a suspect in a cell in 2013.
The late Martin Koome had been arrested after a domestic dispute and died in custody.
Mutua is alleged to have attacked Koome with an iron rod and submerged his head in a barrel of water.
While handing down the sentence, Judge Martha Mutuku said the evidence clearly showed that Mutua was involved.
