Nairobi – Dagoretti Boys High School has been closed indefinitely following student unrest.
On Sunday, September 15, about 11 students were admitted to the hospital after being injured during a fight between two groups.
What did John Kiarie say about the Dagoretti incident?
The riots forced the police to be called to restore order after reports emerged that the dispute was religious, with two groups fighting each other fiercely.
In a statement, the Member of Parliament for Dagoretti South, John Kiarie, said the riots caused extensive damage to the school.
“The incident at Dagoretti High School has caused a lot of damage as the students created violence at night. For luck good, despite the cases of injuries that are dealt with, there are no deaths or arson. All the necessary steps have been taken for the next steps,” Kiarie said.
What caused the Dagoretti High School riots?
TUKO.co.ke found out that the school has been in tension following religious differences between two students.
Preliminary investigation shows that the two groups faced each other due to the basketball match they were playing before the fight turned into a religious one.
In a video that went viral on social media, students were seen using sticks and stones to attack each other during the violence.
What caused the injuries of Catholic students?
Elsewhere, at least 13 students were injured following a fire incident at Katoloni Secondary School, the county Machakos.
The Machakos County Police Commander, Patrick Lobolia, said students were injured after a fire destroyed one of the school's dormitories.
Lobolia said the injuries were caused by a stampede when the students were running to save themselves after the fire started a few minutes after three o'clock on Saturday, September 14.
According to the police commander, all the students were in class for night lessons when the fire broke out.
Lobolia said the stampede happened after the students got scared and started running from the classrooms to save themselves.
