Nairobi – House Speaker Hussein Mohamed has responded to reports that ODM MPs ignored a meeting called by President William Ruto.
On Wednesday, September 11, Mohamed referred to media reports that ODM MPs from Nairobi County refused to meet with Ruto to be rude and baseless.
Did William Ruto invite ODM MPs to the House?
While explaining the sequence of events, Mohamed denied claims that Ruto issued an official invitation to MPs who are affiliated with the former prime minister. Raila Odinga.
He said that on Monday, September 9, 2024, the president was inspecting the progress of the Kibera Soweto Affordable Housing Project East Zone B, which aims to deliver 4,054 units to Nairobi residents.
After the ceremony, the members of parliament in attendance accompanied the president to the White House for an informal lunch.
“State House communicates or invites MPs or any other person or groups through official channels. After the event, the members of parliament in attendance joined the President for an informal lunch at the White House. Contrary to the newspaper report, the White House confirmed that no official meeting was held,” Mohammed said.
However, responding to Mohamed's message, Nairobi senator and ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna accused the State House spokesperson of spreading lies about the alleged meeting.
“You are asleep, my mother,” Sifuna said.
Which ODM MPs met William Ruto?
As previously reported, the new friendship between the president and the opposition leader appeared to be in jeopardy as the latter team seemed to disapprove of the new deal.
Ruto is said to have invited Nairobi MPs who are leaning towards him Raila on his visits to inspect affordable housing projects in the city on Monday, September 9, before gathering at the White House.
Only three members of parliament welcomed the president.
He was accompanied to the area and later to the State House by Makadara Member of Parliament George Aladwa, Phelix Odiwuor of Lang'ata aka Jalang'o, Nairobi women's representative Esther Passaris and Beatrice Elachi of Dagoretti North.
