A police officer suffered burns caused by an allegedly faulty phone that exploded in his pocket.
Constable Simon Chepkirwok was with three colleagues on their way to Kinangop, county NetsThursday morning, September 5, when the incident occurred.
The police, in their report, said their colleague's device, which he kept in his left front pocket, exploded and caught fire.
He was shot in the thigh.
“It was reported by Cpl John Anyimo, PC Simon Chepkirwok, PC Wilson Nyaga and PC Cornelius Kembo, all of DCI Mathioya, that while they were traveling from Mathioya to Kinangop on business…the Tecno BF1' mobile phone belonging to PC Simon Chepkirwok which was in his left trouser pocket exploded and burned him on the left thigh,” read part of the police report.
Chepkirwok was rushed to Kenol hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
Officers took the phone away for investigation.
How an RDU officer lost his weapon while on duty
In another incident of the police being injured while on duty, one senior officer in the city Nairobi he lost his hands in June this year after a tear gas machine exploded in his hands.
Chief Inspector David Maina, who serves in the Emergency Unit (RDU), confronted protesters in downtown Nairobi on Tuesday, June 18, when he detonated his hands with the explosive device.
His colleagues said he detonated the can but was too late to release it on the crowd he was targeting.
The violent version separated his wrists from the wrists at the scene.
Maina was among the police who were facing the protesters who were heading to the parliament to complain to the MPs against passing the 2024 Finance Bill.
