Nairobi – The National Treasury has denied reports that an officer found there has died Machakos he was killed in connection with the tender of millions of shillings in the Treasury Building.
Evans Chirchir, who was reported missing on August 31, was found dead on Tuesday, September 3.
The family, through their lawyers, claimed that the deceased reported receiving death threats due to the KSh 286 million bid.
But setting the record straight, National Secretary Chris Kiptoo said the deceased was not charged with managing any tender activities during his eight-month tenure with the Treasury.
“Evans Chirchir was an intern posted to the National Treasury under the Public Service Training Program (PSIP), Batch 6, effective February 1, 2024. He was assigned a procurement section, but as an intern, he was not fully involved in the process. any bidding or procurement decisions,” said Kiptoo in a statement he sent to X.
Condoling the bereaved family, the PS revealed that Chirchir was not at work when he met his death.
What caused the death of Evans Kipchirchir
He said the deceased had gone to Machakos for an undisclosed personal business.
However, disputing the claim that the deceased was killed, Kiptoo explained that he was involved in an accident on the same day he was reported missing.
It is said that he was hit by a car and died on the spot before being kept in the mortuary at the Machakos Level 5 hospital.
“On Monday, September 2, 2024, the National Treasury was notified of his disappearance and death. His body was found at the Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where he was admitted on the night of August 31, as a victim of a road traffic accident,” Kiptoo's statement added.
PS based his explanation on the findings of the police, who, in their preliminary investigation, showed that Chirchir was killed in an accident.
The police are holding the driver suspected of causing the accident.
“It is important to emphasize that the death of Mr. Chirchir was in no way related to his professional work or any activities in the National Treasury. He was not involved in any sensitive or decision-making positions within the department, and the incident that led to his death occurred in his private time, away from his work duties,” Kiptoo elaborated further.
