The family of Rebecca Cheptegei has revealed the sad feelings of her children when they learned about their mother's condition.
Cheptegei was the victim of a recent brutal attack reportedly over a land dispute with her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema.
Speaking to The Standard, Cheptegei's father explained that the children had been taken by their grandmother, Agnes Ndiema.
He said the marathon runner's daughters, aged nine and 11, had gone to church when the attack happened.
The distraught father added that his grandchildren cried in pain after being told about their mother's attack.
“His children are crying in the house after hearing about the attack,” he said. “I have asked my wife to look after them.”
The attack left the 33-year-old athlete with severe skin damage and life-threatening injuries that affected his throat and airway.
Cheptegei died just two days after doctors expressed concern about the possibility of multiple organ failure due to the severity of his injuries.
The details show that the sportsman suffered 80 percent burns while his alleged assailant suffered 30 percent burns.
His family was about to fly him to Nairobi for special treatment when he passed away.
