Nairobi The Matatu contestant who was caught on an online video arguing with a traffic police officer was brought to court on Wednesday, September 4.

The convoy vehicle unit number 33, Alex Kirigu Ateya, was charged with assault.

The charge sheet that TUKO.co.ke has read shows that Ateya is alleged to have committed the crime on Tuesday, September 3, at around 11 am on River Road in Nairobi.

The prosecution told the court that the accused unlawfully and deliberately attacked Seargent Isaac Kiprono, who at the time of the incident, was performing his duty as a police officer.

In addition, the prosecution claims that Ateya's actions violated Section 103(a) of the National Police Act.

The accused was brought before the Senior Grand Master of Milimani Eric Otieno Wambo, where he denied the charge.

His lawyer asked the court to give him less bail conditions, saying that his client earns less than KSh 300 a day. He was later released on KSh 20,000 cash bail.

In the video, which was widely distributed on various social networks, a person similar to the accused can be seen in a physical confrontation with police officers trying to stop him.

The prosecution intends to call about five witnesses in the case.

The case will be mentioned on September 18.

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that a chaotic situation occurred along River Road in the main business area following an altercation involving matatu workers and traffic police.
