The 33-year-old man is currently hospitalized in the city's intensive care unit Eldoret after 80 percent burns, especially on the back.
Cheptegei was allegedly attacked at her home by her ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema.
Ndiema ambushed the sportsman as he was returning home from church with his children.
Josephat Kirima, head of ICU services, noted that the athlete is on a ventilator and receiving care from doctors.
“He has not woken up yet because the burns are many and painful, but he is taking painkillers,” he said.
According to Citizen TV, the attack was the result of a long-term land dispute between the two former lovers.
Speaking during the visit at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), his family expressed their dismay at the change.
“We visited him DCI at the end of last week to resolve the issue, but he contacted her two days later,” his father, Joseph Cheptegei, said.
The attacker, who was also admitted to the same hospital, was injured by 30 percent.
Where was Cheptegei attacked?
The incident happened at Cheptegei's home in Endebes, where he was training.
Cheptegei is said to have bought land and built a house in Trans Nzoia County to benefit from the nearby athletic training facilities.

The athlete was rescued by neighbors and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Cheptegei, a mother of two, recently represented Uganda at the 2024 Olympics held in Paris, France, not knowing what would happen.
