Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei is in a critical condition at the Moi Referral Hospital after her fiance allegedly set her on fire at his home in the County of Trans Nzoia.
Why did Cheptengei's fiance set her on fire?
Initial reports indicate that the two frequently argued about the house and the plot.
The local chief Rose Chebet told Monitor that Cheptegei's lover, identified as Dickson Ndiema, sneaked into her house on Sunday, September 1, while she was at church with their two children.
When Cheptegei returned home, he found Ndiema who had already bought petrol waiting for him. An argument broke out and led to Ndiema dousing him with petrol and setting him on fire.
“When he returned home, Dickson, who had bought petrol, started dousing Rebecca before setting her on fire,” Chebet said.
In a confusing situation, his girlfriend also caught fire while trying to light a match to burn Cheptengei.
Neighbors rushed to the scene and put out the fire that burned both Cheptegei and Ndiema.
Then they were taken to the Referral Hospital Kitale before being transferred to Moi Referral Hospital due to their burns.
At the scene, police found a yellow jerrycan, a black Mavin believed to belong to Ndiema, and a burnt mobile phone believed to belong to Cheptegei.
