William Ruto promises the government to hire trainee teachers

At a palace meeting in Kisumu on Thursday, August 29, Ruto explained the government's decision to hire teachers as trainers instead of giving them permanent jobs.

While acknowledging the challenge of the shortage of teachers in the country, the president promised to confirm the employment of the current 46,000 trainee teachers within the next two months.

“We have a large shortage of teachers and we also have a large group of trained teachers and schools that do not have teachers. If I decided to hire teachers on permanent and pension terms, I could only hire 12,000 or 13,000. Instead, I chose to recruit this large group of unemployed teachers as candidates, with the assurance that after two years of on-the-job training, they will get permanent and pensionable positions, now they will be confirmed in the next two months,” Ruto explained.

What William Ruto said about the teachers' strike

The President has also asked teachers to reconsider their decision to strike, explaining that the government has provided the necessary resources to fulfill their demands.

Ruto assured the teachers that money has been allocated to meet the conditions agreed in the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the Teachers Recruitment Commission (TSC) and the teachers.

“Some trade unions want to incite teachers to strike for something we have already planned. We have allocated money for the CBA negotiated between TSC and teachers. By today or tomorrow every teacher will have been paid their salaries and arrears according to the signed CBA. There is absolutely no justification for anyone to tell teachers to strike,” the president said.

Why did the Teachers' Service Commission refuse to participate in KUPPET?

Meanwhile, the TSC refused to engage with KUPPET until the union complied with the recent Labor Court order to stop the strike.

KUPPET requested a meeting with the TSC to resolve the teachers' issues, citing the preference for amicable settlement of long-standing court disputes.

TSC said it had fulfilled the 2021-2025 CBA and paid arrears but required KUPPET to comply with court orders before resuming negotiations.

The commission said it has resolved all grievances raised by KUPPET and is ready to negotiate further once the union withdraws industrial action.
