Kenyan Newspapers Friday August 30: Raila To Join William Ruto 2027, ODM Allies Hint

On Friday, August 30, Kenyan newspapers widely reported President William Ruto's visit to Nyanza, considered the political stronghold of his new ally, Raila Odinga.

Newspapers also reported that MPs want the contract between Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to be terminated.

President William Ruto is on a three-day visit to the Nyanza region, which is considered the stronghold of former prime minister Raila Odinga.

Ruto is visiting this area to launch and inspect development projects after appointing several members of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to his Cabinet.

Following the creation of a broad government, the president and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, were well received in the area.

Partners of Raila they hinted at forming a political outfit with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) before the 2027 General Election.

Governors Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) and Simba Arati (Kisii) said ODM no UDA they may form a major coalition in the 2027 elections.

“If these UDA people are giving you a hard time, you should go back to your old party ODM to organize there,” Arati said.

Former prime minister Raila Odinga must get the support of at least two-thirds of the 55 African countries to win the presidency of the African Union (AU) Commission.

Geopolitics, language, and religion will play a big role in determining who will succeed Moussa Faki of Chad as the next chair of the AU Commission.

However, six countries have been suspended from voting due to kidnappings or coups. Those countries are Sudan, Gabon, Niger, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Benin.

To win the seat, Raila will need to get 33 votes. He has the support of 20 countries so far and is set to intensify his campaign across the continent.

He will face Mahmoud Youssouf of Djibouti, Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar and Anil Kumarsingh Gayan of Mauritius.

Members of Parliament Kenya they want the Public Private Sector Partnership (PPP) contract between JKIA and Adani Group to be terminated as it is allegedly shrouded in uncertainty and secrecy.

Members of the Public Debt and Privatization Committee wanted the program to be suspended after the Treasury Secretary (PS) Chris Kiptoo failed to provide important information about it.

Kiptoo gave a one-line response to questions from lawmakers, saying the review is ongoing.

The PS promised to give a detailed report later, but the MPs were not satisfied with his brief explanation.

“I've had enough text here from Gen Z and the public. Some of the protests we've seen in the last month were due to the secrecy of these deals,” Kinangop Member of Parliament Kwenya Thuku said.

A silent war in the presidency has emerged as President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua are trying to compete.

The publication reported that the videos shared by Ruto's team edited out Gachagua, while those released by the Deputy President did not show the president.

On Wednesday, August 28, the White House released a video of Ruto being received with joy in the counties of Migori and Poisonous. A day later, Gachagua's team shared an edited video showing how he was cheered.

This is happening amid the race to succeed Raila Odinga in the Nyanza region. Raila, vying for the chairmanship of the AU Commission, said he would suspend grassroots politics to focus on his ambition.

President William Ruto has promised to make Homa Bay the sixth city in Kenya.

During his visit to the town of Lakeside, the head of state said the government is committed to improving the economy of the region.

“We are planning to give Homa Bay city status, and I will make sure it is done,” Ruto said.
