- On Thursday, August 29, Junet Mohamed said he is the legitimate leader of the opposition, considering he is the minority leader in the National Assembly
- Junet said it was wrong for Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to declare himself the official leader of the opposition, however that office does not exist
- Environment Minister Aden Duale said Kalonzo does not have the numbers in Parliament to make him the leader of the opposition
Minority Leader in Homa Bay Assembly Junet Mohamed has criticized the leader of Wiper Kalonzo Musyoka by declaring himself the official leader of the opposition.
How Junet Mohamed criticized Kalonzo Musyoka
Speaking during the homecoming ceremony of the Minister of Finance John Mbadi on Thursday, August 29, Junet said he was the legitimate leader of the opposition.
Junet said that since the Office of the Official Opposition is not included in the Constitution, it would be right to call the Leader of the Minority Party in Parliament as the leader of the opposition.
“In the present situation, I am the official leader of the opposition because I am the leader of the minority and you cannot take away the work given to me by God. Those in the opposition should know that I am their leader,” Junet said.
The ODM Member of Parliament who came out openly criticized the Wiper leader for claiming a position that is currently not in the law.
“I have seen our colleagues saying that we ODM are in government and things like that, and now they are the leaders of the opposition. There is no part in the Constitution that talks about the leader of the opposition. A person should not set aside a job that does not exist. Let's create an office first and then someone occupy it,” he added.
What Aden Duale said about the opposition leader
Speaking at the same event, Environment Minister Aden Duale supported the views of the Suna East MP.
Duale explained that the 2010 Constitution places the power of the leader of the opposition in the office of the minority leader in the National Assembly.
The Minister of Environment said it was wrong for Kalonzo to declare himself the leader of the opposition, even though he did not have enough MPs elected in Parliament.
“In the Constitution of Kenya Article 108, the spokesperson of the Government in Parliament is Kimani Ichung'wah, while the spokesperson and leader of the opposition is Junet Mohamed, when you are in another place you are roaming around and claiming that it is because Baba (Raila) is gone. AU, you are now the leader of the opposition, yet your members of parliament do not even reach 20, no it is not,” said Duale.
What did ODM say about Azimio's leadership?
At the same time, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) dismissed plans by the United Declaration parties to replace Raila Odinga as the leader of the opposition coalition.
In a press conference on Monday, August 19, ODM chairwoman Gladys Wanga criticized Azimio leaders questioning the commitment to Raila to the opposition.
Wanga said it is bad intention for Azimio leaders to hide behind the recent appointment of ODM officials to the Cabinet to undermine the former prime minister.
According to Wanga, some Azimio leaders were trying to turn Raila into endorsing them before the 2027 elections.
