How were the Machakos suspects arrested?

The two suspects were arrested after one of them, Peter Mutavi, was caught on CCTV stealing from a patient in the radiology department of the centre.

According to a Citizen TV report, a patient argued at the hospital after his phone was lost, prompting security officers to review CCTV footage which revealed that Mutavi was the suspect.

“I suspected that my phone was stolen by a man I met at the X-ray area. But when the investigation started, they showed me the suspect. We also saw another woman in the CCTV footage being stolen,” the female victim said.

The suspect told the police about another relative by the name of Francis Mumo, who he claimed was his accomplice in the hospital robbery.

After further investigation, the police found Mumo in possession of a suspected stolen phone from a patient.

Chief Officer of the Machakos Health Unit, Simon Mwako, said that all payments in the hospital are processed over the phone, thus making it easier for criminals to target patients.

The two suspects will appear in court on Thursday.
