Nairobi – Retired President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo caused laughter after he appeared to defy the support given to him at the state house.
The veteran leader was among the dignitaries who gathered at the State House in Nairobi on Tuesday, August 27, to witness the official launch of Raila Odinga's bid for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).
What Obasanjo said after he was given help
Obasanjo arrived at the stage – where he was to deliver his speech – at the invitation of President William Ruto, the host of the event.
To make it easier to address the packed audience, the organizers of the event put up a board for him, perhaps because of the height challenges.
But showing confidence in his height, Obasanjo struggled to remove the board, much to the amusement of the guests who were watching in silence the whole time.
“I'm not as short as you think I am,” he said.
Obasanjo was the first to bless the ambition of Raila when he announced it earlier this year.
Presidents Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Samia Suluhu (Tanzania), and Salva Kiir (South Sudan) attended the official launch.
The next chairman of the AUC is expected to come from East Africa following the decision of the AU General Assembly.
Countries from North Africa will provide the deputy chairman, and the remaining regions; Central, South and West Africa producing six commissioners.
That candidate of Kenya he will need the support of consensus or at least two-thirds of the votes by the member states represented by their heads.

Raila will need the support of either consensus or at least two-thirds of the votes by member states represented by their heads.

He recently announced that he would leave local politics to focus on that ambition.
